Vlado Simko:
MEDICINE IN COLONIAL AMERICA
Thanks to medical advances in the last 150 years we can hardly imagine the impact of disease on the colonization of America. Infections and epidemics were out of control, ancient beliefs and superstition prevailed; the transportation and exchange of information were minimal. Blood letting, purgatives, emetics and blistering further increased the rate of mortality in the seriously ill. Wounds usually became infected, amputations were done without anesthesia. In the Revolutionary War more soldiers died of smallpox and dysentery than battle injuries.
